I watched the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic opening ceremonies last night. All in all, I think they’ve done a pretty excellent job across the board with these Olympics so far. I think we can be proud.

How can you not be moved by the world’s top athletes coming together and competing in an environment that strives for excellence? The message that it sends about physical fitness alone is inspiring.

But am I the only one that finds it offensive-verging-on-outrageous that McDonald’s – that obesity and cardiac disease inspiring producer of fat and sodium “sandwiches” – is a major sponsor of the Olympics? AND the official restaurant of the games. With THREE on-site “restaurants”.

Do people REALLY like their irony served up with a super-sized order of fries?

Woke up at 4:30 AM – a full hour before I usually get up – and couldn’t fall back to sleep.

Fed the dog, who proceeded to vomit it all back up.

Cleaned up the mess.

Walked the dog, who obviously wasn’t feeling so good

Showered and dressed for work

Stepped in the diarrhea that the dog had left in the kitchen for me while I showered

Cleaned up the dog’s mess again, and spent several minutes reassuring him that I wasn’t mad at him. (He NEVER makes messes inside – and doing so really seemed to freak him out)

Left for work, all the while feeling stressed cuz the dog wasn’t feeling well and I didn’t want to leave him alone all day

Forgot my wallet at home, so I couldn’t buy lunch for myself

Had a truly crappy day at work (but I made a deal with myself never to blog about such things).

Had a truly crappy day at work (but I made a deal with myself never to blog about such things). (Worth mentioning a second time)

Had a truly crappy day at work (but I made a deal with myself never to blog about such things).(A third time thrown in for good measure seems reasonable, under the circumstances)

Drove home. Got a ticket on the way

Got home and cleaned up even more doggie mess

Walked the dog, cooked some rice to mix into his kibble

Spent the rest of the evening cuddling a very unhappy and sick pooch

Wanting to forget that this particular day ever happened, I climbed into bed at 8 PM, and was asleep about two minutes later

Was woken up very briefly by the phone a half hour later, but I hardly remembered the call this morning when I woke up

Sleep is an awfully useful tool for shrugging off the crappier days.

So that we can all feel safer, it is ESSENTIAL that we change our laws to reflect the following principles:

We need to eliminate from society any individual who is strong and healthy, because strong and healthy people are more likely to be able to effectively commit terrible crimes.

We must also eliminate any individual of greater-than-average intelligence, because they might be more easily trained to commit crimes.

It is far more important for the law to eliminate the victims of physical or mental abuse rather than pursue the abusers. After all, it’s their own damn fault for being victimized in the first place, isn’t it? (And if we can’t see the victims, it makes it easier for us to pretend there was never a problem to begin with.)

Finally, we should eliminate any and all individuals who have similar physical characteristics of people or groups who have, in the past, ever been associated with violent or criminal behaviour. (Of course, this would mean wiping out the entire populations of North and South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, The Middle East, and, well, just about every other human or animal on the planet.)

Only when we live by the above-mentioned principles will we really begin to feel safe in our communities.

Now, here are a few facts that (thanks, as always, to media sensationalism) you may or may not be aware of:

There is no such thing as a breed of dog called a “Pit Bull”. “Pit-Bull” is a common term used to refer to several different breeds of dog of the Molosser family. Furthermore, there are an estimated 24 to 27 different breeds of dogs that share similar physical features to those associated with “Pit Bulls”.

Ask any veterinarian or veterinary college: “Pit Bulls” are no more or less likely to be aggressive than any other type of dog. In fact there is no scientific evidence ANYWHERE to support this (largely media-hyped) myth.

In general, “Pit Bulls” DO tend to be: 1)Very intelligent and easily trained; 2)healthy and strong; and 3) loyal. (Gee, what a TOTAL shock that some assholes choose this particular breed of animal to be fighter and/or attack dogs.)

ANY animal can be trained (ie: abused) to be vicious. Even a Chihuahua. And there are certainly no shortage of other breeds of dogs that are commonly used for such purposes: Rottweiler, Doberman, German Shepherd, to name just three, not to mention the hundreds of different cross-breeds that often get used. Strange that governments aren’t banning these breeds as well…

Before the more recent media-hyped and sensationalized bad reputation these animals have been tagged with, ”Pit Bulls” were widely considered to be the quintessential family pet: Loyal, easily trained, affectionate, and healthy.

Jurisdictions across North America have enacted Breed-Specific legislative bans on “Pit Bulls” based on much of the aforementioned sensationalist “Bull” shit. These completely unjustifiable laws have been unfairly enacted against these poor dogs, preventing people from owning them or adopting them from shelters. This has resulted in the mass euthanasia of thousands of innocent animals whose only crime was being healthy, strong, and intelligent, and that having similar physical characteristics to a non-existent “breed” of dog.

The reason for this disgusting mass slaughter of animals? It is politically easier to make the public feel “safer” by banning an entire group of animals who have no voice and cannot defend themselves than to go after the REAL source of the problem: The abusive owners that train these animals to be vicious in the first place.

If the media wanted a sensational story to report that one-ups “Dog Bites Boy“, they should write about how politicians who are directly responsible for killing thousands of animals created laws to punish the innocent so that they would have to deal with going after criminals.

Not only should these same politicians be booted from office for not protecting the safety of our communities, they should also be prosecuted for mass cruelty to animals.
